Facebook was fined $5 billion in 2019 by the Federal Trade Commission for privacy violations and allowing Cambridge Analytica to harvest user data. This was the largest fine ever imposed on a tech company for privacy violations. Despite the penalty, critics argued Facebook still got off easy and did not face enough accountability.

There are also concerns over Facebook’s dominance in social media and online advertising along with its acquisition practices. Without substantial reforms that prioritize user well-being over profits, Facebook’s bad reputation seems poised to worsen in the years ahead.
