How do I review posts I’m tagged in on Facebook?

Being tagged in posts on Facebook can be a great way to connect with friends and family and see what they’re sharing about you. However, it also means you may be tagged in posts you weren’t expecting or that you want to remove yourself from. Fortunately, Facebook provides tools to help you manage tags and review posts before they appear on your profile.

Check Your Notifications

The easiest way to see posts you’re tagged in on Facebook is to check your notifications. When someone tags you in a post or photo, you’ll get a notification on Facebook. You can access notifications by clicking the globe icon in the blue toolbar at the top of your Facebook window (on desktop) or tapping the bell icon in the menu bar at the bottom of the Facebook app.

Your notifications will show you any recent posts, photos, videos etc. that you’ve been tagged in. You can click or tap on the notification to go directly to the post and take any actions like removing the tag, liking the post, or commenting.

Review Tags in Your Activity Log

For a comprehensive look at all the posts you’re tagged in, use your activity log. This is a private log that shows all your Facebook activity, including posts, photos, likes, comments and tags. Here’s how to access it:

  1. Click the down arrow in the top right of your Facebook window.
  2. Select “Activity log” from the dropdown menu.
  3. Click “Your posts and tags” on the left side.

This will show you a complete history of all the posts and photos you’re tagged in. You can click on individual posts to see them and manage the tag.

Review Tags on Your Timeline

Tags also appear on your Facebook timeline, alongside your own posts. However, tags only show up here once you’ve taken an action to approve the tag. Until then, they’re private and only you can see them. Here’s how to review tags on your timeline:

  1. Go to your profile page.
  2. Scroll through your timeline to look for posts you’re tagged in.
  3. Look for a label that says “With [name]” or “With [name] and [x] others” to identify tags.
  4. Click on the tags to manage them or remove yourself.

Manage Tag Notifications

By default, Facebook notifies you whenever you’re tagged in a post. However, you can turn off notifications for tags if you don’t want to review every single one:

  1. Go to “Settings & Privacy” then select “Settings.”
  2. Click “Notifications” on the left side.
  3. Scroll down and turn off notifications for “Tags you in a post” and “Tags you in a photo.”

With notifications off, you won’t get alerts for new tags. You’ll need to manually check your activity log or timeline to review new tags. This gives you more control over tags without constant notifications.

Approve or Ignore Tags

When you’re tagged in a post, you have options to control if and where the tag appears:

  • Approve the tag – This adds the post to your timeline so anyone who visits your profile can see it. Tap or click “Approve Tag” under the post.
  • Ignore the tag – This keeps the post private. It stays in your activity log but won’t show up on your timeline. Tap or click “Ignore” under the post.
  • Remove the tag – This completely untags you from the post so it’s no longer connected to your profile at all. Tap or click “Remove tag” under the post.

If you ignore or remove a tag, the person who tagged you will get a notification that you removed yourself from the post.

Prevent Being Tagged

If you want to avoid being tagged in undesirable posts altogether, use these steps to get more control:

  1. Go to “Settings & Privacy” then “Settings.”
  2. Click “Timeline and Tagging” on the left side.
  3. Under “Review posts you’re tagged in before the post appears on your timeline?” select “Enabled.”

This adds an approval step before any new tag shows up on your profile. You’ll still get notifications for new tags, but you have to actively approve each one before it becomes public.

You can also restrict tags to only people on your friends list:

  1. Go to “Settings & Privacy” then “Settings.”
  2. Click “Timeline and Tagging” and look for the “Who can see posts you’re tagged in on your timeline?” section.
  3. Select “Friends” instead of “Public.”

This prevents anyone except confirmed friends from being able to tag you. And remember that you can always untag yourself from any unwanted posts, even if you’re already friends with the person.

Untag Yourself from Old Posts

If you find unwanted old tags on your timeline, you can remove them to curate your profile. Just click or tap the ellipses (…) icon at the top right corner of any post you’re tagged in. Select “Remove tag” to untag yourself. The post will disappear from your profile.

However, this doesn’t delete the post entirely – it will still be visible on the timelines of anyone else tagged. And it remains in your activity log even if it’s no longer public.

Delete Tags from Your Activity Log

To completely remove a tag from your activity log:

  1. Go to your activity log and click “Your posts and tags.”
  2. Click the ellipses icon next to the post and select “Hide from timeline.”
  3. Click “Confirm” to verify you want to remove it from your log.

This will delete the tag from your private records. However, it’s still visible to anyone else who was tagged.

Report Inappropriate Tags

If someone tags you in a post with offensive, abusive or bullying content, you can report it to Facebook:

  1. Click the ellipses icon in the post and select “Report post.”
  2. Choose “It’s abusive or harmful” then “It’s bullying or harassing.”
  3. Select any applicable options and add any extra context.
  4. Click “Report” to submit to Facebook.

Facebook will review the post based on their community standards and take appropriate action, such as removing the post or disabling the account.

Block Someone from Tagging You

If a person repeatedly tags you in inappropriate posts, you can block them from tagging you in the future:

  1. Go to their profile page.
  2. Click the ellipses (…) icon in the top corner and choose “Block.”
  3. Select “Block [name]” to confirm.

This prevents them from tagging you, interacting with you directly or seeing the posts on your timeline. Any existing tags from them will remain, but they won’t be able to add new ones.

Temporarily Disable Tagging

You can take a break from tags entirely by temporarily disabling your ability to be tagged:

  1. Go to “Settings & Privacy” then “Settings.”
  2. Click on “Timeline and Tagging.”
  3. Turn “Who can tag you in posts?” to “No One.”

This prevents anyone from tagging you. When you’re ready to allow tags again, just switch the setting back to “Everyone.”

Remove Tagging Permissions for Specific Friends

If only some friends are tagging you excessively, you can revoke their ability to tag you while keeping it open for others:

  1. Go to “Settings & Privacy” then “Settings.”
  2. Click on “Timeline and Tagging.”
  3. Under “Block specific people from tagging you,” type in the name of the friend to block.
  4. Click “Block” next to their name.

This stops them from tagging you in the future without affecting anyone else. Previously existing tags from them will remain until you manually untag or delete them.

Conclusion

Being tagged on Facebook can be a fun way to engage with friends and share memories. However, unwanted tags can clutter your profile and share information you’d rather keep private. With the right settings and tools, you can take control over how you’re tagged. Review posts frequently, limit visibility, untag yourself and report offensive content as needed. With some vigilance, you can curate tags to showcase your best moments.
